Real Madrid have been displaced at the top of the Spanish La Liga standings after Atletico Madrid left it late to beat city rivals Getafe away from home in their league encounter on Tuesday night.Real Madrid had a two-point advantage over defending champions Atletico Madrid ahead of the latest set of games in the Spanish La Liga.

Atletico Madrid were able to scale through a tricky trip to face Getafe at the Coliseum thanks in part to the red card given to Spanish midfielder Carles Alena on 74 minutes. Getafe had done a good job of defending their one-goal lead until the point of that red card. An unfortunate own goal from Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblakhad given hosts Getafe the lead on the stroke of half-time.

La Liga holders Atletico Madrid made the most of the numerical advantage given to them by the red card to Alena with two goals in the last 12 minutes courtesy star man Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan international scored the equaliser on 78 minutes and just four minutes after the red card to Alena off the cross from Mario Hermoso. Suarez then scored the winning goal on the stroke of fulltime to break Getafe hearts off the assist from Croatian right-back Sime Vrsaljko.
The win preserved the unbeaten start to the new season for Atletico Madrid who have 14 points from their first six league matches in the new season with a record of four wins and two draws. They are one of five unbeaten teams in the league this season as far as the La Liga is concerned. The other four teams are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Villarreal and Sevilla.
Real Madrid lost their place to Atletico Madrid at the La Liga summit after the Getafe game on Tuesday but they can reclaim their place back with at least one point in their home game against Real Mallorca on Wednesday night. Real Madrid are one point adrift of Atletico Madrid with a game in hand and a better goal difference.
