VARANE SAYS HE COULD HAVE MOVED TO ENGLAND
Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane revealed that he had the chance to move to England to reunite with former coach Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Under the Portuguese tactician, Varane enjoyed first team action, and soaring confidence. With the switch to current manager Zinedine Zidane, Varane has lost his spot in the squad. This fuelled links to Old Trafford, especially as Mourinho was looking at adding defenders.
As Real Madrid won their eleventh Champions League title, Varane was on the stands, and he seemed as if he wasn’t as enthusiastic as the rest of the players who were getting all the action. During the break, it seems he spoke to the management, as he seems to have found his back to the squad. The 23-year old has started in the first three games of the new campaign so far.
“It is flattering. Manchester United are a very big club. But from the moment Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there’s no questions to ask yourself. I have always said I feel good in Madrid,” Varane disclosed. “It is not easy to say ‘no’ to Jose Mourinho, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons,” he added
The French international has been named in Real Madrid squad for Champions League this season. Surprise addition was Martin Odegaard. The 17-year old Norwegian teenager was included in the list by Zinedine Zidane after a purported loan deal to Rennes broke down due to his age. Former Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti claimed Odegaard was signed as a “PR stunt” after his sterling record for local club side Stromsgodset.
Odegaard would have the chance to feature alongside stars like Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric, Isco Alarcon, James Rodriguez and others in the middle. He might not get playing time in the continental tournament as Madrid defend their title except there are injuries.
